Last week, about 200 people gathered in Eastport, Maine to dedicate the first tidal-power project in the country that will deliver electricity to the power grid. The Cobscook Bay Tidal Energy Project will deliver to Maine both clean energy and jobs, though perhaps not enough jobs to save Eastport.
That’s because Eastport, a historic fishing town the extreme northeast corner of the U.S., is dying a little more each year as its residents get older and young people flee to find work. According to the latest U.S. census, the city lost almost 19 percent of its population in the first decade of this century, and two-thirds of the population is 40 or older.
